26-Aug-15 Reminiscing Reminiscing - I recently reported the finding of some 2004/2005 ‘archive‘ team pictures (see News item 4th August) and asked if anyone had any other ‘archive‘ items that we could share.

Yesterday I was pleased to receive an email from former Player, Treasurer & Secretary Martin Shutler with some memories and a couple of Team photos from 1985 and 1988. These are shown (see left - click picture to enlarge). These pictures have also been added to our Squad Page and listed with all the names Martin can remember

(there's was one name missing originally but individual subsequently identified as Graham Fox by Alan Shakeshaft - thanks Alan).

I include Martin's words below :-
" I thought you might be interested in the following Verwood Town squad photos dating from the 1985 & 1988 seasons. I was a player, Treasurer & Secretary during this period and these photos contain the core of the players that won the Pickford Cup twice, Dorset Senior Trophy; and finished runners up in the Bmth League Div 1, nearly becoming our own ‘Invincibles‘ only losing one game, last game of the season 1 - 0 to our arch rivals Trinidad Bluebird FC, but going on to gain election to the Hampshire League the following year. "

Once again, if anyone has something intersting from their ‘archives‘ and happy to share then please let me know. We have precious little information or images of Verwood Football prior to 2000 and it would be good to improve that position as we move ever closer to a 100th Anniversary. Let me know at the Webmaster address - Roy

06-Aug-15 Poore On Season Ahead Pre-Season patter - Poore on Season ahead

A short while ago Mick Cunningham caught up with Carl Poore and gained some thoughts from him on the season ahead:-

"We haven't got the money to splash the cash! If I had £150 to spend on a player it does a help of course, but I still want to deliver results. It's a hard league coming up with the likes of Sholing and Salisbury, but I believe if we can show that we work as a team, which we can do, we will not make it easy for anyone. Money doesn't get you anything if you have a squad that is willing to work hard every week. I do believe that with the players we have, and experience from pre-season that we are capable of getting good results. I did rely on loan players last season, particularly from my old club Poole. We had to try and get a squad together quickly given all the changes and we did bring in dual sign/loan players. I do realise that we can't go down that route because we need lads who are committed to the club and want to be at training every week. There is a great back up team and we are looking forward to the season ahead"

24-Jul-15 Poore On Groves Pre-Season patter - Matt Groves on becoming Assistant Manager

It will be hard, I'm very aware of that. At this level, players will be away and I know the commitment level is not the same. There is a big difference and that's down to money. We don't pay anything, but we have had a good turnout for training and during the pre-season, we have done well. We know we have to work round certain things, but we knew that from the start, but it is all positive so far and Carl and I have been happy.

We are trying to work on things and people are listening, so hopefully we can take that in to the games. I have seen an improvement in everything both on and off the pitch, players and non-players. When I first joined, we didn't know what players would be playing as we got them from everywhere. We know we can't do that and we are looking for a core of around 18 players and there is no problem about aiming for a top ten spot.

We are looking forward to the season. Yes we want money to get to a new level, but that is not here now so we accept that. There is no reason why we can't be a success though. The determination, organisation and commitment we have here can get us a long way and that is what we want and what we aim for."

18-Jul-15 Poore on Groves Pre-Season patter - "Poore On Groves!" - Manager Carl Poore talks to www.vtfc.co.uk about his new assistant manager, Matt Groves

"Having Grovesy around had been fantastic. His knowledge of the game is second to none because he has played at a great standard of non-league football. He has passed on little pieces of information and his experience in the game to the players, and I think in pre-season it has showed. I don't always see what he does and Gavin Reeves can also see things that I don't, so we now have three sets of eyes on the field, picking out things where we can improve. There was a few eyebrows raised when he first joined, but he has been superb for us. He is a local lad who wants to play his football. He gets looked after at Verwood, he knows what a great club it is and to have him as my assistant is a great bonus to me."
