Match Report Verwood Town vs Wimborne Town 01-Aug-23

STEVE MOORE MEMORIAL TROPHY
TUESDAY 1ST AUGUST 2023
VERWOOD TOWN 1 WIMBORNE TOWN 3

Wimborne retained their grip on the Steve Moore Trophy with a 3-1 win at Potterne.

We’re becoming notorious for slow starts. This was no exception. Wimborne applied pressure from the kick off.

4 minutes had elapsed when Phillips went up high for a cross but collided with an inrushing forward. Suspected concussion meant a forced change. Dave Kerr put his hand up to don the gloves.

We stood firm for ten minutes but then succumbed to a deep cross from their right and leaving a player unmarked in the box meant a 0-1 score line.

Pressure continued but we rallied and gained ground. Carswell and Shepherd went close with shots but we couldn’t find the net.

Danvers and McWilliams worked the flank and on 28 minutes broke through on Wimborne’s right. McWilliams ball into the box found Shepherd, a quick shuffle created space and a volley brought the best out of the keeper.

A few tumbles stopped play for a time so it was on 48 minutes that McWilliams 20 yarder found the back of the net resulting in the teams going in at half time with a goal each.

Half Time. 1-1

Dave Kerr had performed exceptionally well in goal and continued in the role.

Wimborne’s opening was brisk but it was 13 minutes into the half when a mix of players in the area finished with a toe poke pushing the ball into the net… 1-2.

2 minutes later Carswell Kimber and McWilliams interpassing made ground. A low ball across the box found Shepherd. A volley took varnish off the foot of the post.

The game now was more end to end.

Sam Hockey came on for Bue Bennett and shortly after Louis Braggington came on for Joe Kimber. On 25 minutes Sam Farndell came on for Aidan Shepherd and Shane Orchard came off to give minutes to Kai McCrow.

We lapsed slightly on 34 minutes letting Wimborne in to make it 1-3.

We deserved a couple of goals towards the whistle but failed to finish.

Result 1-3.
