Match Report Verwood Town vs Whitchurch United 22-Dec-2007

SYDENHAMS LEAGUE (WESSEX) DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 22ND DECEMBER 2007
VERWOOD TOWN - WHITCHURCH UNITED (MATCH ABANDONED)

Following several days of cold and frosty weather we enjoyed a double figure temperature but accompanied by bouts of drizzle. The mix caused a mist to hover around the pitch.

Whitchurch looked a very changed side from the one we met earlier in the season and opening stages gave indication of a determined team intent on three points.

A long ball had Elysee scampering back to cover the box and a good block gave us the ball. Lynch moved forward, collected the pass and a 35 yard shot was tipped over the bar. The corner was cleared out to the right and Murray moved in quickly to stop the run.

Whitchurch were quickly into the tackle and our Arnold Reeves combination was fully stretched. Goodall dropped a bit deeper to forage and was dropped unceremoniously just over the half way line. The free kick floated into the box and Lynch out jumped everyone in the area only to see his header go wide.

14 minutes and King swapped passes with Homer. The return ball on the edge of the box found King racing free and a left foot shot had the keeper beaten but hit the side netting.

Then Whitchurch broke through our central barrier but Willis was quickly off his line to clear the danger.

We had a couple of chances but both shots from Homer and Dyer were well saved as the mist rolled in.

The long balls were now becoming a mystery as to where they might be. The linesman had disappeared on the far side so with 38 minutes gone the Ref decided to suspend play for 15 minutes to see if the mist would lift. It didn't, so the game was officially abandoned.

We now look forward to our away game against Totton & Eling on Boxing Day followed on the 27th with Potterne being graced by Verwood Vets KO 17.30 hrs.
