Match Report New Verwood Town vs Newport 01-Mar-25

VELOCITY WESSEX LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 1ST MARCH 2025
VERWOOD TOWN 2 NEWPORT IOW 1

A good first half, a blitzed second half with a grandstand finish just about summed up this game. (/i>

Grzybowski set the ball rolling in the first minute with a good run down the left finishing with a shot going inches wide.

We pushed on. Kerr used an overlap to deliver a good cross taken by the keeper and quickly followed was a Pope, Bentley combination setting up Lordache for a shot that whistled past the post.

Newport countered but ran into a Morrison brick wall on their right. Possession was well contested but we had the edge and should have gone ahead with several good moves but without the finishing touch.

23 minutes gone and a sweeping move finished with Weardon being fouled. The free kick dropped nicely for Pope to hammer the ball past the keeper 1-0.

Newport hit back with a flurry of attacks down the flanks but we had a solid look at the back and Dinnivan’s handling was exceptional on the day.

4 minutes left of the half and Bentley won the ball in our third. A surging run took him to the edge of the Newport box and a daisy cutter had the keeper beaten but hit the foot of the post and rebounded. Lordache nipped past his marker the bury the ball in the bottom corner. 2-0.

Half time 2-0

The second half produced a headache for management. The quality of the first half seemingly went on hold. Movement was more prominent in the Terracotta Army than in our mid field and forward line. Gradually we got pushed back and forced to defend in numbers.

Only 7 minutes gone and Hockey had to come off through a groin strain. Whitelaw came on, one for one.

Inevitably with 16 minutes gone and no VAR, a disputed goal reduced the score line, 1-2.

We had to rely mainly on clearances to get into Newport's third. Space was handed to the visitors from which Toth Bignell Kerr and Morrison had to excel.

22 and Morrison suffered injury, Fletcher came off the bench. 8 minutes later and another blow as Kerr went down under a heavy tackle and had to come off. Saunders substituted.

Pressure was intense. Our area was like a war zone as crosses sailed in. We withstood the barrage.

5 minutes left of normal time and Grzybowski made way for Knott.

The ref signalled 7 minutes of extra time. Defibrillators were made ready for the line. We dug in and on the whistle celebrated a gritty performance and a well earned 3 points.

Result 2-1
