Match Report Romsey Ton vs Verwood Town 16-Sep-23
VELOCITY WESSEX LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER 2023
ROMSEY TOWN 3 VERWOOD TOWN 0
We forced a corner 2 minutes into the game following Haensel’s run down the right and a good cross diverted on the near post. Romsey won the header and countered through the middle. Broad did well to cut out a shot on the edge of the box and sparked another attack on our left with Sam Hockey making good ground but seeing his cross booted upfield. A good opening but short lived.
Romsey retaliated and enjoyed possession for a major part of the half. We had a complacent look about us in comparison to Romsey’s attitude and found ourselves pinned back.
Defensively we coped well. Pope and Kimber provided good cover and with Danvers and Broad occupying full back spots we looked solid.
Romsey changed attacking mode switching more to a long ball game. Phillips was now more involved but as usual keeping a clean sheet until the 28th minute when a ball threaded through fell for a runner in the box. Phillips save at feet was judged a foul…penalty.. 0-1.
37 gone and a Romsey attack down their left finished with a low cross into the box. A back heel put the ball past Phillips into the bottom corner. 0-2.
Half Time. 0-2
Ollie Lowes had to come off at half time giving Dillon King his first outing.
Romsey continued where they left off. Phillips fortunately was on form blocking a shot from a runner who had been given freedom to slip into the box unchecked.
2 minutes later a good move involving Danvers McWilliams and Carswell, freed up Shepherd. A sliding tackle took the ball and legs. Despite penalty claims the Ref waved play on.
Romsey maintained pressure and on 9 minutes good football on their left resulted in a dangerous ball dropping into the penalty box. Kimber won the header clearing danger.
We were on the back foot again. Pope and Phillips came under pressure but resilience held until with 30 gone a high ball into the area was cleared by Phillips. Romsey won the ball back in midfield, a good ball found an unmarked player. 0-3.
Counters could have yielded had we been more clinical in front of the sticks but typical of the game Hockey and King blazed efforts wide and anything encroaching space in the box was hoofed out. No Pep Guardiola playing out of the back. Just a robust style of keeping the ball away from the keeper, it proved effective.
Lee – Brad gave way for Richardson to make a bow with 5 left.
Carswell made the run of the match with 2 minutes left, cutting past two defenders and squaring for McWilliams. A big boot beat McWilliams and a clearance landed just outside our box. In swept Kimber. Romsey’s forward swallow dived. Kimber departed following the waving of a red card.
Result. 0-3
