First ten minutes largely belonged to East Cowes but we dealt capably with opening attacks and worked our way into the game with Carswell and Shepherd combining well to keep ECV’s deference occupied.

A corner on 12 minutes dropped for a Ponder volley but the local boatman was the recipient.

It was an open game with both teams committed to going forward.

Coombes was busy for a period but with Davis Kerr Broad and Brown performing well we produced a tight defensive shield.

We had better chances towards the end of the first half with Tabor and McWilliams going close and a volley from Shepherd being cleared off the line.

Just prior to the whistle to end the first half an ECV low cross took a rebound and into the path on an attacker who was able to comfortably slot home.

Half Time. 0-1

Verwood started the second half with much more urgency, good passing and movement taking the game to ECV.

Fishlock’s presence in midfield was of note both in defensive duties and sparking attacks. Only five minutes had gone when a Fishlock cross field ball split ECV’s defence for Tabor to have a shot but watched it well held by the keeper.

A couple of corners for ECV caused some concern in our penalty area but with Coombes handling on top form we survived the brief spell of East Cowes dominance.

McWilliams Shepherd and Carswell were unlucky with efforts towards the end of the 90 minutes as Verwood pushed for what would have been a deserved equaliser. However on this occasion ECV hung on and it was not to be.
