Match Report Verwood Town vs Fawley 27-Sep-22
WESSEX LEAGUE CUP - ROUND 1
TUESDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER 2022
VERWOOD TOWN 3 FAWLEY AFC 0
We had 15 minutes of a tentative start with both sides giving a reasonable show of quality but without any venom in finishing.
Fawley claimed the first corner but a combination of Smith and Broad cleared the box of danger.
Carswell broke through with 20 minutes gone and his low shot from the edge of the box was well saved. It was looking better as we gained a higher percentage of possession. Fishlock slammed a shot just past the post but we fell back into a possession mode without a finish.
Counters from Fawley were covered by a tight defence with Broad and McHale containing the flanks.
Broom did well to block a couple of mid field counter runs as we continued to control possession.
A couple of minutes from half time we won a corner. An inswinger dropped nicely for Smith who’s deadly from 3 yards out. Good header and we went ahead.
Half Time 1-0
McHale had to come off early in the half with an injury and McWilliams made his appearance. A shuffle of the pack and whilst we settled, a flurry of attacks from had us pegged in our third.
Mitchell made a couple of good saves and was helped by Davis Broad Smith and Broom’s shield across the box.
It wasn’t the most exciting game to watch at this stage but McMonagle sparked life into it with a great goal making it 2-0.
Then a blow. An innocuous tackle by Harley Stock who had come off the bench to keep warm was judged a red !!!!!!!! Down to ten men.
Rather than sit back and defend we continued pressing and a Fishlock shot should have put the game to bed but the ball clipped the angle and disappeared into the trees.
Sam Farndell came on with ten minutes left and made a great impression scoring our third with an opportunistic strike.
Result 3-0.
