Sad to say, but Spurs’ season is going from bad to worse writes John Porter. This was their fifth
consecutive defeat, and it isn’t easy to see where their first points are coming from. Suffice it
to say that in the four equivalent fixtures that they’d played in 2021/22, they had gained 10
points.
In this game, they were outplayed throughout by Verwood, and the final score – which was
the exact reverse of what happened in March - gave a fair indication of the play.
From the outset,
the visitors took the initiative, keeping possession diligently and using the width of the pitch
with intelligent cross field balls. They took the lead in the tenth minute when Ethan Fishlock
produced a high shot from 25 yards that caught home keeper Jack Coleman off his line and dipped
just under the crossbar
The Potters continues to dominate, but resolute defence kept them out until
the interval.
In the last 15 minutes of the half, Fleet came more into the game. The nearest they
came to scoring was after 32 minutes when skipper Tom White was perhaps unlucky to have an apparent
goal from a strong right-foot drive disallowed for handball after he’d turned cleverly on the ball
just outside the box.
Half-Time 0-1
Half-time came with Fleet hoping to continue their improvement
after the break, but instead Verwood re-established their early dominance.
However it took until
midway through the half before they could add to their score. Coleman failed to punch a cross from
the right clear and Louis McWilliams hammered the ball home from an angle. S
purs’ heads had dropped
and that goal seemed to secure the points for the visitors, who made absolutely sure three minutes
later. After Fleet had given the ball carelessly away, skipper Jake Carswell converted Cameron
McMonagle’s low cross from close range. That concluded the scoring as Fleet were unable to create
any chances and the Potters seemed to have settled for a three-goal victory.
Full-Time 0-3
