Match Report Wimborne Town vs Verwood Town 26-Jul-22
STEVE MOORE MEMORIAL TROPHY
TUESDAY 23RD JULY 2022
WIMBORNE TOWN 3 VERWOOD TOWN 0
Our annual fixture for the Steve Moore Trophy took place on New Cuthbury. A great setting for the event.
Wimborne were first to attack down their left. Jackson steamed in to win the ball and put us immediately on the attack with a great ball wide for Rossiter. Defenders blocked the run and a big boot cleared up field.
It was a quick opening and the pace continued with attacking ideas from both sides.
McWilliams almost broke through following a Smith through ball but Wimborne’s defence quickly marshalled to cut out the threat.
It was a good opening spell with both teams giving as good as they got.
Smith and Jackson were busy curbing central attacks and Phillips was on song with great handling when the odd shot crept through.
Mukambi jinked his way past his marker with 12 minutes gone and an intelligent ball cut open Wimborne for Rossiter to try his luck from just on the edge of the box. Good hands from the keeper kept the score sheet blank.
Wimborne’s pressure paid off with good football reaching our area. Out came Phillips to make a stunning save at feet.
We were second best for a short time but resilience paid off a and we hit back with some excellent football.
Half Time 0-0
Wimborne upped their pace at the start of the second half but we matched it. Despite the heat both sides were committed to attack and making it worthwhile for spectators who had made an effort to get to the game.
Smith broke up a central attack and breezed his way forward to switch the ball wide for Mason. A good cross was cleared from the penalty box.
With 17 minutes of the half gone we went one down as a slight lapse in concentration gave Wimborne a glimpse of goal and we went behind 0-1.
Pressure increased and we were pegged back for a while but fought our way back again to threaten the Wimborne goal.
They held firm and on 32 minutes it was retaliation time as we allowed a runner space, 0-2.
2 minutes later we hadn’t settled and Wimborne took advantage again making it 0-3.
No heads dropped. We tried hard to reduce the score line but the whistle went with Wimborne retaining the trophy for another year.
Result 0-3.
