Match Report Verwood Town vs Millbrook 29-Jan-22
WESSEX LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 29TH JANUARY 2022
VERWOOD TOWN 1 MILLBROOK 3
Two teams in mid table provided an uninspired game with Millbrook leaving with the three points on offer.
Flashes of good football were few and far between and although we have a young side with some skilled footballer’s we resorted to a scrappy display short on rhythm and flair.
Millbrook grabbed their three points from a more consistent display in the second half leaving us disappointed that we didn’t maximize opportunities in the first 45 minutes.
We coped adequately with Millbrook’s long ball game in the early stages with Danvers and Hockton busy on the flanks.
Vining & Davies suffered close attention and a series of petty fouls prevented progress into Millbrook’s area.
Millbrook improved their distribution. Long balls found channels and counter attacks brought the best out of Smith Broad and Phillips.
Generally it was scrappy football. We had a couple of good opportunities but failed to score.
Missing was someone to put their foot on the ball and talk. It was a Mortuary attendants dream.
41 minutes gone and Danvers sprang an attack on our left. A good run and pin point pass to McWilliams split Millbrook’s resistance. McWilliams cross found Carswell, and a half volley put us ahead. 1-0.
Two minutes later Hall and Vining raced through leaving Vining to finish. The keeper made a fabulous flying save.
Inexperience led to a leveler. Another Carswell break was blocked on the edge of Millbrook’s box. A big boot caught us too far up the pitch. A runner broke away and made it 1-1 on the whistle.
Half Time 1-1
Aerial attacks began from the kick off. Millbrook were now more accurate in finding channels. Mid field became redundant and we were not covering their backs as we should have.
Phillips was extra busy giving a quality show as he dealt with several efforts on target.
A bright patch emerged half way through the half as we strung together some good football on the deck.
Danvers and Davies put shots in but over the bar and a move through Stock and McWilliams finished with their keeper making a flying save.
A cross into our box on 19 minutes of the half was totally left as a grateful forward nodded past Phillips. 1-2. 5 minutes later another lob found a runner 1-3.
27 - gone and a double substitution. Nace came on for Vining. And Hall came off to give Stacey a run.
34 - on came Hunt for Broad.
Three minutes later Davies cut inside the box but was dropped on the spot. Penalty. The keeper dived left and the ball hit his feet whilst in the air. A big let off for Millbrook. The rebound fell for a Stacey volley. Ferndown suffered.
Millbrook’s experience kicked in as they played the game out.
Result 1-3.
