Amesbury wasted no time in trying to grab an early goal. A slick move down their right and a deep cross tested James as runners closed in. Good hands took a clean catch whilst Mason and O’Hare policed the box.

A couple of minutes later Ben Kelly stopped a central attack heading out a high ball to Fisk. Fisk was tackled on the edge of the box before he could get a shot away.

It wasn’t a classic game but both teams tried hard to grab the points.

Amesbury seemed to have a bit more energy than us and on 38 minutes pressure paid off when they went in front from a simple but clinical attack. 0-1.

Dyer and Anderton prompted and pushed forward to grab an equalizer but a solid Amesbury defence did well to shield their keeper.

Bergin and Fletcher went close with shots towards the end of the half but we couldn’t get that all important leveler.

Half Time 0-1.

Max Mason made way for Matt Gilham at the start of the second half and Bergin made way for Beattie.

Amesbury’s chat at half time spurred their energy level and for a few minutes we had to defend as they pushed us back. James pulled off a couple of good saves and Kelly blocked a shot heading for the bottom corner.

A long high ball was headed clear by O’Hare and Kimber followed up with a good run down the left crossing deep onto the far post. Fisk read it well and a knock back was hammered goalward by Ryan Kelly. The keeper did well to turn it round the post.

The corner floated across the area but sailed out of play without a touch.

Then came a turning point in football. Proof of resurrection. A mirror image of Forrest Gump. 54 minutes had elapsed when Kris Anderton shed his crutches and set off on a mazy run. Amesbury defenders were bewildered by his movement. It was similar to a Morrisons trolley. Anderton’s run finished with a shot beating the keeper but not the bar. In came Max Fletcher to power the ball over the line. 1-1.

60 minutes evidenced Gilham enjoying his first outing for a long period after injury and joining in with Fisk down the right. A ball inside found the ever ready Dyer. On to Beattie and Beattie rounded his marker delivering a low cross into the area. Ryan Kelly slammed a shot that hit legs and then Fisk tried one that ended up in dead ball.

Amesbury hit back with a ball wide right giving space at the back for a runner. Kelly raced across to block the cross and clear.

10 minutes left and Amesbury hit the post. At the other end Beattie got round the back of the defence but finished with the ball in the side netting.

7 minutes left and a prostrate Anderton was airlifted to the dug out to give Warren a chance to stretch his legs.

Warren managed to touch the ball as the whistle went for full time.
