POOLE TOWN LADIES 4 VERWOOD TOWN LADIES 0
An unseasonally warm afternoon saw Verwood Town take on a very strong Poole Town in an away fixture. This was always going to be a tough early season test for the team, who were only playing in their 2nd ever competitive game.
The early exchanges were very even with no team able to create any clear cut chances. Verwood holding their own and competing equally all over the pitch started to create chances and held firm for 25 minutes until a terrific Poole Town strike beat Lisa.
Verwood took the game to Poole having a period of possession, creating a number of half chances. Against the run of play, Poole won a corner and in a freakishly unlucky turn of events, Lisa got a hand to the ball, directly from the corner kick for it to just creep in.
Verwood didn’t let their heads drop and again took the game to Poole Town having the better of the exchanges on the run up to half time.
The second half began with both teams matching each other like for like with nothing separating them. 20 minutes into the second half and disaster struck as a Poole Town forward was caught just on the edge of the area and the referee pointed to the penalty spot. Lisa picked the right way, diving to her right, but was unable to stop Poole claiming their 3rd goal.
The fourth came against the run of play late in the second half for the game to finish 4-0. A score line which flattered Poole as Verwood were equal in every way apart from their finishing with as many chances falling to both sides and possession being shared 50:50.
Two terrific and unstoppable shots for two of the Poole Goals and nothing more than bad luck for the other two were all that could beat Lisa.
Outstanding performers today:
Kirsty, who is Verwood’s Pablo Zabaleta looked unbeatable at right back and has looked solid in the last two games.
Sophie showed a lot of skill on the ball causing a lot of panic in Poole’s defence.
Lowrie covered more ground than any other player, linking play together seamlessly.
But the player of the game today was Lisa who made a string of fine saves and even guessed the right way on the penalty but was unlucky to stop it. She could not have done anything to prevent the goals that she conceded.
Well done Verwood, it just wasn’t your day today. But to compete on equal terms away to a team who is expected to place in the top three this year after only one competitive game as a team shows just how good this team is right now and the potential for the team was clearly visible to all who saw the game.
Well done to Poole Town, who do look a very strong team this year and we look forward to playing them again later in the season.
