Match Report Verwood Town vs Whitchurch United 7-Dec-13
WESSEX LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
SATURDAY 7TH DECEMBER 2013
VERWOOD TOWN 0 WHITCHURCH UNITD 1
Brad Hill, Jason Lovell & Nathan Saxby all were missing so the team and bench had a bit of surgery before we kicked off.
Whitchurch were first out of the traps attacking down their right. Murray blocked the cross so an early corner had to be dealt with by Oldring.
We hit back through Evans and Gajic. Gajic finished the move with a chip into the box. Homer got a head to it but the keeper took a clean catch.
10 minutes gone and Whitchurch worked the ball to the outside of the area. A cut back was hit cleanly for the bottom corner. Lynch made an outstanding save stopping the ball crossing the line.
Oldring Kelly and Evans made consecutive contributions to block shots as Whitchurch funnelled forward. Lynch punched an effort clear and then Murray got in the way of a cross shot destined for the net.
Oldring , in particular at this stage led by example in an all action defensive display.
16 minutes gone and a shot from the edge of our area was palmed away by Lynch but the ball fell kindly for an unmarked forward and we found ourselves one down. 0-1.
Joy and Webb dropped deeper to shore up the defence and we gradually got ourselves back into the game. Gajic went close with a header and then Evans overlapped on the right dropping a cross on to the penalty spot. Homer shuffled inside his marker but the shot went wide.
Saxby dropped behind the forwards and sparked off a couple of couple of good moves with telling through balls.
Murray's free kick on 34 minutes dropped on Homer's head. The ball was put across the area and there was Oldring to plant his effort straight down the keeper's throat.
We were now enjoying more of the ball and Sam Joy's volley on 43 minutes deserved more than shaving the varnish wrong side of the crossbar.
We almost gave away a second with a minute left of the half but Lynch was on top form to stop a 6 yarder crossing the line.
Half Time 0-1
We started well and Dyer created an opening for Murray to try a dipping shot. It
Went wide.
Whitchurch hit back but Oldring got in the way of the shot and sparked off a move in the centre. Joy and Webb combined to free up Dyer and from the edge of the area a cross into the middle was just inches too far for Gaqjic to turn into the net.
We were enjoying good possession and should have levelled the score line with 55 minutes gone but yet again we hit the side netting.
Saxby intercepted a cross field ball and linking with Homer made ground. A chip into the box found Gajic but a wall of defenders proved to be an impenetrable barrier.
60 minutes it was Lynch's turn to save a good shot and a minute later be assisted by Kelly in fending off an aerial attack.
Dyer whipped a good cross across the area and Homer nodded it back across the box to Gajic. A header towards the top corner was well taken by the keeper.
Webb's work rate was noticeable as he chased down anything through the middle and intelligent use of the ball put us regularly on the attack. Missing was the cutting edge.
Whitchurch defended well getting players behind the ball as we pushed on. Dyer almost pulled us one back with a good run and shot but the keeper took it well.
Webb tried a long shot but watched it go wide and then Joy blasted a volley high over the bar.
Evans galloped free and this time cut inside to try a shot. Like other efforts on the day it went wide.
Pushing forward almost cost us as Whitchurch broke on their left. An excellent cross was well covered by Lynch.
We pressed forward and with a couple of minutes left had forced a couple of corners. Dartson came on to try and add an athletic approach to the attack but Whitchurch weathered the storm.
We didn't have the finishing touch so lost the three points in a back to back defeat by the visitors.
Result 0-1.
