Match Report Verwood Town vs Horndean 24-Aug-13

WESSEX LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
SATURDAY 24TH AUGUST 2013
VERWOOD TOWN 1 HORNDEAN 0

Brothers Munday made their first full game appearance for Verwood. Dan, signed through the week joined brother Darren up front

Haskell using the energy of the very much younger man, slipped the ball wide left then sat back to watch Dan M round the full back and try a left foot shot. The keeper watched the ball fly wide.

Horndean hit back within minutes to push us into our third. A good interchange and shot was intercepted by Oldring. An intelligent ball to Murray put us on the counter and Dyer continued the break rounding his marker and squaring the ball to Dan M. Out came the keeper to close the angle and Dan M's exquisite chip cleared the keeper but was headed off the line by an attentive full back.

A minute later it was Horndean's turn to attack. Murray's lunge was judged a foul. The free kick dropped on the back post. Dyer headed out of the area, back it came and Lynch was on hand to gather safely.

Webb forced his way through mid field and a dipping ball found Saxby. A cross was headed out for a corner. In it came but curled nicely into the keepers hands.

Evans Webb and Saxby cut through on the right, a cross and Dan M crept in on the far post to slam the ball into the side netting.

Daz M connected with a volley testing the keeper and then Haskell headed over the bar for a corner. Situation normal then, good approach work but no sting in finishing.

Half way through the half Horndean gained more possession and a brilliant 25 yard shot was matched by an equally brilliant Lynch save.

Minutes later we gave away a corner. The ball dropped onto the near post. Lynch forced his way through a couple of bodies to punch clear. A follow up shot cleared the bar.

Kelly and Oldring stopped an attack just outside the area. Oldring dropped the ball at the feet of Haskell. On to Elysee then to Dan M. A shot was cleared out of the area. Dan M chased and won it back. A cross and a Haskell header but yet again into the keeper's hands.

Webb went close in the final minutes of the half as we maintained pressure but without a goal.

Half Time 0-0

30 seconds only had elapsed when a quick attack created space for a shot. Lynch was beaten but luckily the ball shaved the post.

Oldring was furious at the thought of a static defence. A few well chosen Anglo Saxon verbal views were expressed.

Dyer and Webb got on top of mid field. Saxby and Murray made ground from a Dyer threaded ball and the move finished with Daz M slamming the ball wide.

7 minutes we were still on top. Murray chipped the defender. Dan M went to the bye line and a low cross found Haskell in space. Haskell side footed home. 1-0.

Murray's hamstring yet again twanged. On came Kimber. Straight into the mix. Kimber delivered a telling ball to Daz M. A cut back found Haskell, a shot from the edge of the box went wide.

We then went through a scrappy period. Misplaced passes. Second best in the tackle and a lethargic approach to the game. It gave Horndean a grip on the game.

Lynch made a couple of saves and our defence was stretched. Kelly Oldring and Evans did well to cover each other as we re grouped.

Dyer and Webb fought hard and with 71 minutes gone worked the ball to Dan M. Outstripping the defender Dan M slammed an angled shot but was disappointed to see it hit the side netting.

We pushed up. Aware of the disaster at Newport, Adie and Darts went hoarse demanding a defensive discipline. It worked. Cover dropped in and only just in time. A counter attack on the right finished with a block tackle from Dyer. Oldring rushed across in support and the ball was finally cleared.

83 minutes and we almost had a second as a well worked move from Oldring sparked a move through Evans. Evans line ball found Dan M. Cutting inside, Dan M squared to Haskell. A chip into the box and Webb swivelled to plant a volley over the bar.

A late flurry from Horndean was well policed and Kimber Kelly Oldring and Evans provided enough defensive cover to prevent Lynch needing diazepam.

We had to work hard for these three points so it was a reasonably happy Adie and Darts that reflected on the result.

Result 1-0
