Match Report Verwood Town vs Wimborne Town 7-Nov-12

DORSET SENIOR CUP - ROUND 2
WEDNESDAY 7TH NOVEMBER 2012
VERWOOD TOWN 0 WIMBORNE TOWN 2

Two events before the kick off.

Wimborne's Supporter arrived early and settled in a corner of the stand sinking molars into a giant Verwood Town Hot Dog. His teeth are still waiting to be collected.

Nicholas O'Hara the area's top Funeral Director was seen lurking at the edge of the stand. It prompted a question as to whether there was some deadly contagious disease in the area that hadn't been flagged up.

A good crowd, decent weather and a good playing surface gave the opportunity for the teams to provide spectators with a value for money game.

Wimborne were out of the blocks straight away. A cross from their left steered towards the penalty area was headed clear by Smith. Dyer collected the ball and sparked a run down our left through Hill. An attempted cross was blocked and Wimborne were back in our half.

Only 6 minutes had elapsed when the first real shot on goal went wide from within our penalty box.

A brisk opening and good game for the spectators. Ooo's and aaah's were a feature when Dyer broke free just outside Wimborne;s box and released a left foot volley but watched it go wide.

15 minutes and a cross was headed down by Kelly. Did it touch his hand ? The debate continues as to whether the penalty decision was correct. It doesn't matter who thinks what, as the ball was fired past Lynch putting Wimborne ahead 0-1.

19 minutes and Hill's low angled shot went inches past the foot of the post.

21 minutes Wimborne pushed us back and grabbed a corner. An inswinger wasn't covered properly and we were two down. 0-2.

A bit shaken but a growing character in the team gave grit and determination to fight back. We were made to work hard by a good movement and accurate passing opposition.

Lynch had to make a couple of important saves half way through the half but generally we felt we were back in the mix.

Half Time came with the score at 0-2 and Wimborne's supporter back at the Burger Bar.

Verwood were first out to start the second half, primed from a dressing room rallying speech by Adie Arnold and Andy Dartson.

Haskell had been closely marked by the centre backs in the first half denying room. Within a minute of the re start though Haskell had powered his way to the 6 yard box. A right foot shot was blocked and the keeper watched the effort drift past the post.

Saxby was next to try a shot then collected the re bound from a defender to set up Haskell for another try. Haskell's shot was well held by the keeper.

Wimborne hit back and Delaney made a brilliant tackle to stop entry into the area. Evans won the race for the ball and making ground on the right slipped his marker and a cross was headed just over by Webb. The game was now evens in terms of possession but Wimborne still looked more dangerous than we did on the break.

Satts broke free and a shot from just outside the box was watched over the bar by a wrong footed keeper.

Lynch then made a diving save as Wimborne broke through. A throw to Kelly and then on to Hill put us back on the attack. Hill this time outpaced his marker and a shot from the corner of the area grazed the wrong side of the post.

Delaney won a tough header from the keeper's dead ball. Good control and a side pass to Kelly opened up space. Kelly made ground. Instead of an anticipated cross Kelly worked the ball to 25 yards out and hit a cracker. The keeper did well to palm away and Satts predatory instinct put him in a position to drive a low volley for the corner of the net. The keeper's recovery was exceptional and safe hands prevented any further goal mouth activity.

Hill Saxby and Webb worked the ball through the middle. Webb's pass found Gajic. A quick cross was diverted for a corner. In it came with Smith and Delaney joining the crowd. Delaney was a little too far forward with back to goal but tried an overhead kick. The ball beat the defence but skimmed the post.

Gajic tried a shot then Satts whipped the ball just over the bar.

Then came a torrid ten minutes as Wimborne forced us back and peppered the area. Lynch was outstanding and Evans Delaney Smith and Kelly were superb in keeping the sheet clean in the second half.

Result 0-2
No one kicked their clogs so a very generous VTFC had a whip round for Nick O'Hara.
