Match Report Verwood Town vs Petersfield Town 20-Nov-2010
SYDENHAMS (WESSEX) LEAGUE DIVISION 1
SATURDAY 20TH NOVEMBER 2010
VERWOOD TOWN 5 PETERSFIELD TOWN 0
A good win last Saturday in the Vase, a lesson learned on Tuesday night in the Wessex Cup so what could we expect today?
The teams came out for the now customary hand shake and the most eye catching spectacle was a pair of boots hanging off the end of Mike Haskell's legs. Mostly white with red splashes led us to believe they were suffering from haemorrhoids.
The game was only a minute old when Morrison relieved a visiting forward of the ball and a short pass found Smith. Smith's ball to Haskell was a peach. Haskell gathered, turned and fired a low shot for the bottom corner. The keeper made a good save with the ball spilling slightly. Saxby lunged in but the second attempt by the keeper to gather the ball was successful.
3 minutes later Dyer went wide and delivered a great cross that Saxby connected with but the ball flashed past the post.
It was a good start that got better a minute later went Lynch chipped a ball to the edge of the box and Haskell rose high above defenders to glance a header to Saxby. Saxby raced round the back of the defence and slipped the ball past the keeper for the first goal. 1-0.
9 minutes and this time the corner fell at Haskell's feet. This lad could have dominated the contenders on Strictly Come Dancing as he shimmied, went left then right, then crashing the ball into the net,
2-0.
17 minutes and a cross cleared a bunch of defenders allowing Dyer to volley a third.
We were enjoying a terrific spell of possession and with not a lot of resistance.
Saxby had a shot from the edge of the box the keeper did well to clear and then Lanahan stole in to try a header that finished on the top of the net.
Dear collected a long clearance and Smith surged through a bunch of players to gather the pass and try a shot. The keeper palmed the effort away and in swept Dyer to put the ball into the side netting.
28 minutes and it was Murray latching on to a loose ball and chipped the back four for Smith to carry the ball past a lone defender and chip the advancing keeper..... 4-0.
It was Christmas come early. Another Saxby effort hit the side netting and then Haskell brought out a great save from the keeper with a dipping volley.
Petersfield still hadn't got themselves together when a Smith and Lanahan move split the Petersfield right hand defence wide open. In came the ball and Elysee's shot was blocked. Lanahan's shot was kicked off the line and then Saxby hit his follow up wide of the post.
40 minutes we moved the ball from left to right. A low cross flew across the edge of the Petersfield box and Lanahan caught it just right to see the ball whip past the keeper to make it 5-0.
Murray collected a hamstring pull and on came Matt Newbery.
A massive last gasp rush at goal almost had us going six up but the keeper made a great save diving to his left to palm the ball out to the centre half who wellied it skyward giving the ref a chance to blow for half time.
Half Time Score 5-0.
The pressure applied in the first half had tailed off. Petersfield conversely attacked every time they had the ball so the half was a bit mixed in terms of possession. We had the edge but not the same finishing quality as we had shown in the first half.
Smith had the ball in the net with 48 minutes gone but the linesman decided we had somebody offside. We've had an inquest but couldn't find the culprit.
Anyway...Full Time 5-0.
