Match Report Verwood Town vs Andover New Street 5-Oct-2010

SYDENHAMS (WESSEX) LEAGUE CUP
TUESDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2010
VERWOOD TOWN 2 ANDOVER NEW STREET 0

New to the Club John Webb (known as Pip) made his debut in the No. 7 shirt. Pete King got a start in his fitness recovery and James Murray swapped his No. 3 for number 11 berth.

19 seconds only had gone when Haskell had a chance but went wide of target .Generally though it was a stuttering start. Our passing was spot on as far as Andover was concerned. We kept them in the loop and gave them more of the ball than ourselves.

ANS looked sharp and they worked hard to make impact. One attack down the left caused bowel movement but Fawcett made a great save at the foot of the post. It was a wake up call.

Matt Dear won a tussle with 15 minutes gone and haring off down the line managed to reach the edge of the ANS area before chipping a great ball into the 6 yard box. In went Haskell but his header went straight to the keeper.

19 minutes almost a mirror image but this time it was Dyer engineering the break giving Haskell the opportunity to volley from the edge of the box, making the keeper earn his corn.

King managed to clear the dandelions heading a Dyer cross over the top and then a couple of minutes later slammed a shot into the side netting.

Haskell fed King, a cross found Murray and a low shot was brilliantly saved by the keeper. We got a corner. King headed down but a very large boot cleared the line.

34 minutes we made ground on the right, a low hard cross from Dyer and there was Murray sliding in to touch the ball over the line. 1-0.

Webb linked with King over to Murray, a cross and the ball went untouched through the area.

Half Time 1-0.

Andover was determined and put a couple of good moves together at the start of the half. It wasn't sustained and we got back on top.

We made a succession of attacks and Haskell with King looked as though we would soon increase the lead.

A counter attack looked dangerous but Steve Moore 'raced' across and a sliding tackle took the ball and player over the line for a throw in. The throw was intercepted by Delaney and we cleared the danger.

The visiting keeper was tremendous. Saves from Webb and Haskell were the highlights.

57 minutes Lynch's diving header hit the bar and was cleared. Then Dyer's cross was met by King. A rising shot was tipped over the bar. We had enjoyed a good spell but the ANS defence was marshalled well by the centre half and the route to goal was blocked off.

Delaney and Morrison won a couple of tackles and Lynch as usual was a powerhouse in winning headers.

A slick move through the middle had us worried but the ensuing shot was well monitored by Fawcett.

61 minutes and the irrepressible Steve Moore came off to give Martin Smith a run.

Webb then chipped over the defence...in raced Haskell and a cracking effort hit the post to rebound into play. The ball was cleared into our area and a long shot was dipping under the bar but Fawcett made a fantastic save to palm the ball over the top.

73 minutes and Murray made ground to cross into the box. An almighty scramble followed. Murray followed in and a slight gap gave him the chance to place the ball past the keeper to make it 2-0.

75 minutes Morrison came off to give Matt Newbery a run and then 14 minutes later Dyer made way for Martin Newbery.

The game finished with the score 2-0 in our favour.
