Report
Just as you think things are improving with a fresh start to a season you suddenly get a stark reminder about the joys of running a reserve team. Seven changes in personnel from the previous game make it so difficult to form any sort of consistency. A complete new back four, half a new midfield and half a new front line was going to make things difficult and all that playing away to last years runners up!
We started brightly for the first 5 minutes with the ball remaining totally in their half. But their first attack showed that we were going to be vulnerable.
The emphasis in the dressing room before the game was to ensure no mistakes were made, but these words of wisdom appeared to have been forgotten after 15 minutes when due to two errors we were caught on the break and were a goal down. Ten minutes later another error and the score was doubled. We were not closing their players down, not winning challenges and in general were letting them totally dictate the play. When we got the ball we played attractive football but didn't make any gilt edge chances. Two more goals were conceded prior to half time and then fortunately came the half time whistle.
To the teams credit they came out in the second half and there was a marked improvement. We were competing in all areas apart from one occasion when they scored again. We had better chances and substitute Mark even hit the post on his debut, but by then the game was well and truly buried.
Five nil was probably a flattering score line for them but we can't afford to gift so many goals.
October's fixtures are out and give us league matches against the current leaders and twice against the current champions. However the first of these games is on pitch one at Potterne, which will be our first outing on this sacred turf since April!
