Match Report Verwood Town vs Farnborough NE 16-Sep-2009
SYDENHAMS LEAGUE (WESSEX) DIVISION ONE
WEDNESDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER 2009
VERWOOD TOWN 2 FARNBOROUGH NE 1
Top of the table Farnborough were rocked by Truan's goal in only the third minute of the game. Farnborough hadn't settled properly allowing Truan to break free and then beat the onrushing goalkeeper with a low shot into the bottom corner of the net. 1-0.
A brief retaliatory strike had Fawcett in action but we continued to push forward carrying the game to the league leaders.
Lovell was thoroughly enjoying his encounter and a couple of snap shots were on target but comfortably saved.
Arnold and Dyer moved through the middle and Dyer finished off the move with a low shot to the keeper's right but the ball finished up in the keeper's hands.
13 minutes and Faulkner was fed a great ball by Murray. The fans were amazed at the turn of speed. It was thought Imodium might be needed but Faulkner's cheeks were tight as he flew past a static defender and hammered a left foot shot past the keeper. 2-0.
Farnborough played some great stuff and it suited us on the night. It made us play and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed the game.
22 minutes and we cracked on the right. An excellent piece of football created space for a shot and luckily it went over the bar as Fawcett clawed space.
We hit back with a move involving Lovell, Dyer Truan and Lovell again. Lovell spotted Truan running free. An inch perfect pass landed at feet and a shot had the keeper beaten but flew wide of the post.
5 minutes left of the half and we had to defend in numbers. Lynch and Jamison were outstanding in this period.
Came the whistle....2-0 at half time.
6 minutes gone and Truan broke on the right, over came the cross and Lovell's header looked like crossing the line. A size 9 boot deflected the ball and Lovell had to make do with a barrage of Anglo Saxon. We were pressurised by a quick forward line and it was the turn of Elysee and Murray to quell attacks on the flanks. Fawcett's chat was welcome as he pulled players in to defend.
23 minutes and Faulkner made way for Lima.
We continued to challenge for the right to the three points and it made excellent watching.
75 min we gave away a corner. An inswinger was met by a well guided head and Farnborough made it 2-1.
Now came the end to end bit.
Both teams went for a goal. We don't know how to close a game down so we went for it. Lovell had a crack then Anderton smashed a shot just past the post. Lima hit a volley that sped past the upright.
It needed a change so Adie Arnold and his Motley crew decided to give Anderton a breather and on came Lanahan.
A move down the right, a high cross and out came Fawcett to make a great catch under a lot of pressure.
Dyer collected the throw and linking with Lanahan made ground on the left. Lanahan cut inside and a sweet right foot shot tested the keeper. A good save, a throw down the right and then it was our turn to sweat as a shot hit the post and bounced out.
Arnold and Lanahan battled away in the middle and anything spilling over was mopped up by a steady back four.
A long range effort from Arnold was on target but an alert keeper held the shot. A long boot up field was met by the final whistle.
This one was hard earned but a very welcome 2-1 win.
