You always want to score goals, however netting after 45 seconds seemed to affect us more than Suttoners. A rash challenge by one of their players about the half way line got us a free kick and the player a talking to by the Ref. A long diagonal free kick by John Homer found its way to Tristan whose shot was deflected and looped over their keeper. We then sat back on our laurels whilst Suttoners responded immediately and put us under pressure. They were first to every ball, won all the challenges and for half an hour we were not in the game. We paid the price as by 20 minutes in we were
2-1 down. A goal mouth scramble from a free kick out wide saw them equalise and their second was a near post flick from a corner.
To our credit for the last quarter of an hour we started to perform. Dan Goodall who was carrying an injury before the game had to come off. Tristan was pushed up front and Ben Britnell came on left side of midfield. With 5 minutes to go we had a sweeping move upfield, Jack Mills put Tristan in, his shot was blocked by the defender, so he laid the ball back to the supporting Adam Faulkner who struck a beauty which went in off the underside of the bar.
Half time enabled me to share my wisdom with the players and with confidence we set out for the second half. We were having difficulty coping with their long ball, direct style of play and in truth the hard pitch was making our football style difficult to play. Half way through the half they were awarded a dubious free kick on the edge of our box from which they scored. We changed Marc Harrison for Sean Jones and Chris Buss came on for Andy Munson but soon afterwards they got a fourth when a move down the middle put their right midfielder in whose firmly struck shot flew past Ben Daniels in goal. There had been a spate of bookings made by the Ref and it was no surprise that one of Suttoners players got sent off, although perhaps unluckily for the challenge he made. Their 10 men though kept possession well although we made some excellent chances to make the game closer but couldn't find the back of the net.
All in all we didn't deserve to win, too many basic errors cost us the game, still we live and learn!
