Match Report Warminster Town vs Verwood Town
25-Feb-2009
SYDENHAMS LEAGUE (WESSEX) DIVISION ONE
WEDNESDAY 25TH FEBRUARY 2009
WARMINSTER TOWN 0 VERWOOD TOWN 0
Dyer arrowed the ball across the area and Homer missed the ball by inches. It could have been a dream start.
Warminster stung into retaliation pushed us back and a sweeping move down the right finished with a cross bringing a good catch from Fawcett.
Arnold and Giles broke up a central raid as the game settled to some good football played on the deck. Warminster seemed to have the edge for a while but we produced some good stuff from the flanks.
Homer was his usual ebullient self prodding and probing and forced the home keeper to a good save with 15 minutes of the half gone.
The home crowd bayed their disapproval of the refs decision to give us a free kick just outside the area but they needn't have worried, Dyer planted the ball over the bar.
Arnold moved forward and brought Elysee into the attack with a through ball catching the home defence square. Elysee fired the ball across the area but Goodall's volley hit the side netting.
Back came Warminster and Fawcett was forced into a brave save at feet as we cracked open at the back.
Reeves and Dyer worked hard again in the central area as the game gradually worked its way out between the two boxes.
Both sides were eager for the ball so the spectators were thoroughly enjoying a good game.
43 minutes and Warminster almost went ahead with a rising shot from just outside the box but Fawcett safely handled the ball keeping the score at 0-0 on the break.
Both sides continued where they left off. Warminster looking a bit more dangerous than we did in front of the sticks but our defence was resolute and we held tight.
Dyer again was in the thick of things having forsaken his flank role for one in the middle alongside Reeves.
Elysee went on his 'match mad run' collecting the ball wide right and pushing the ball round the defender tried a shot from 20 yards. Pigeons in the centre of Warminster Christened yet again a local statue as the ball flew past the roof tops.
A long clearance almost caught us pushing too far forward but Fawcett was quickly off his line to beat the centre forward to the ball.
It was a see saw half but with both sides trying hard to play good football.
Tactical changes were made by both managers but neither side could change the score line.
Murray soldiered on despite a niggling back problem and Dean Evans was seen in the latter stages limping slightly from an Achilles problem.
The last ten minutes saw both side going for a win and the game opened up for shots at goal b ringing the best out of the keepers.
Homer and Goodall again had shots go just wide and Dyer almost pinched the points with a volley in the last minute.
As always Warminster's hospitality was first class so after a hard fought but scoreless game it was a pleasure to join them in the Warminster Club House for refreshments before heading back in the Verwood chariot driven by Physio Dan Eldridge.
A good game but ….0-0
