Report
Happy New Year to everyone, after this result it certainly is for
me. First league win of the season against formidable opponents
and in truth the scoreline did not do our domination justice.
With the 1st teams match called off due to a frozen pitch I was
able to call upon three players who used to play for the
reserves. This strengthened our side as did the return of the
Martin brothers.
We had by far the better of the play in the first twenty minutes
and got our reward when young Carl Smalley cut in from the left
and hit a right footed shot into the far corner of their net.
Carl went onto have an excellent game until a hamstring
tightening caused us to make a change in the second half. 10
minutes before that Andy Munson who had also played well in the
middle of midfield was caught by a late tackle and also had to be
replaced.
The second quarter of the game saw Suttoners come back into match
although we were still on top and made good chances that were not
converted. We were breaking up both flanks and passing the ball
better than we have done all season.
The second half still saw us on top again squandering chances
although their keeper made a couple of excellent saves, one of
which dislocated his finger. In a truly remarkable sporting
gesture our physio, Cath Ryan went on and put the finger back in
place and their keeper continued! However soon after their
forward was sent off for verbal offences after committing a foul
he argued the decision. Initially I do not believe the Ref was
intending showing any card, but the player ended up with a
straight red. If anything this drove Suttoners into all in attack
although this created space for us up front but again we did not
take advantage. Additionally, there were some juicy challenges
going in but as normal our players just got up, accepted the free
kick with no retaliation for which they deserve the upmost
credit.
All in all we played extremely well with some excellent
performances. Colin did not have a save to make during the game
and my only criticism is that we should have bagged more than one
goal!
