Match Report Verwood Town vs Warminster Town
3-Sep-2008
SYDENHAMS LEAGUE (WESSEX) DIVISION ONE
WEDNESDAY 3RD SEPTEMBER 2008
VERWOOD TOWN 1 WARMINSTER TOWN 0
We kicked off. Goodall to King, Goodall went
right and collected King's pass. A swinging ball dipped over
the keeper into the net. 1-0. 15 seconds gone!!!
We maintained pressure. 2 minutes and Dyer tried a chip over the
keeper but his effort clipped the bar and went over.
Lynch and Goodall combined with Goodall finishing off the move
with a rasping shot that whistled wide.
Goodall's pace was troubling Warminster's defence and we
enjoyed an excellent fifteen minutes because of it.
Warminster worked their way into the game and the crowd was
treated to a good open game as both teams committed to
attack.
Our visitors got themselves into our half and gave us a torrid
time. Willis brought off a number of saves a couple of them top
draw stuff. Our back four worked overtime for the rest of the
first half as Warminster maintained their attacks.
Yerby and Homer faced pacey forwards but luckily matched them
much to the delight of Willis.
Edwards and Arnold worked well down the right and a low cross
into the area almost saw a second but the foot of the post
deflected the ball away from Dyers outstretched leg.
King bolstered our defence and alongside Lynch formed a good
enough barrier to keep Warminster from scoring. Two cracking
efforts though with a couple of minutes left beat Willis, but
fortunately for us went over the bar.
Half Time came with the score still 1-0.
Half a minute gone and Warminster wormed their way past our
defensive 'wall' and a rising shot went over the bar.
2 minutes later Willis was forced into a diving save and then
Yerby dived to head clear from a volley just outside the box.
Cousins broke up the next attack and linking with Edwards made
ground on the right. Arnold collected Edwards through ball and a
switch back gave Goodall a chance to hammer a shot goalwards. The
keeper was equal to the task and a quick throw caught us cold. A
run through the back four and Willis came out for a one on one.
Spreading himself at feet Willis diverted the ball for Elysee to
pick up and clear.
We won a corner. In came King and a terrific header was tipped
over the bar. In came the second corner. Up went King again and
another save produced corner number three. This time it was Lynch
who won the ball but this time it went past the post.
Then Warminster's attack split us apart. Out came Willis to
head the ball from the edge of the box.
32 minutes and Goodall hit the bar. Out bounced the ball to the
edge of the box and a packed crowd resulted in a penalty
decision. Goodall placed the ball to the keeper's right. The
keeper guessed correctly and palmed the ball away to be
cleared.
The game continued in end to end stuff but as the half progressed
it was Warminster enjoying the bulk of possession.
Again we had Elysee Yerby and Homer chasing forwards and Lynch
anchored in the middle clearing central attacks.
Homer and King almost had the ball in the net with five minutes
left but yet again the keeper did well to hold the ball.
44 minutes and a brilliant piece of football let in
Warminster's forwards. Willis brought off the save of the
game with a low dive finger tipping the ball to safety.
The whistle blew…….1-0.
