Match Report Verwood vs Wimborne 24-Jul-2008

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY
THURSDAY 24TH JULY 2008
VERWOOD TOWN 2 WIMBORNE TOWN 4

Note from the Webmaster:
Interesting one this!! - the submitted match report below records 2-6, although the score (and report) posted after the game by Wimborne Town on their website (www.wimbornefc.co.uk) shows the result as 2-4 (they even have video of the four goals!)
I was present at the game and have my own view on what the score was, although I was busy taking photos (..and no these can't conclusively prove it either). All I can say is that during the second half there appeared to be some difference of opinion as to what the score was!. For the website record, I've settled for 2-4 ..and hey! that's better than 2-6 anyway!!

To coin a phrase - "The Truth is Out There" (perhaps!)

Match report

Fawcett Newbury (Martin) Murray Moore Cox Cousins Elysee Keighley Newbury (Matt) Arnold Homer Homer (John) King Goodall.

It was a scene from the walking wounded. Cox had to have his left foot soaked in cold spray because of a swelling. John Homer limped his way to the bench while Steve Moore brushed up on his Anglo Saxon.

Wimborne's squad was bigger than the crowd.

1min 19 seconds and Fawcett calmly collected the ball from the back of the net as a snap raid down the left was turned into a goal.

Sleeves rolled up we were ready to hit back. While we were steeling ourselves for an attack the ball was rifled into the roof of the net for Wimborne's second.

2 minutes 30 seconds on the clock and two down. Adie and Nigel slipped into disguise.

16 minutes and we had done enough to make the Wimborne defence break into a sweat. Newbury and Elysee combined. A low cross was met by a frantic defensive boot and the ball looped over the keeper to make the score 1-2.

2 minutes later and Wimborne snatched a disputed goal to make it 1-3. .

Murray had meanwhile limped off.

22 minutes and it was another disputed effort that stood….1-4.

Newbury/Elysee a cross and with 20 minutes left it was 2-4 as Homer stroked the ball past the keeper.

Wimborne's second half changes meant almost a new team. Our answer….…a team of medics.

BUT….Two of the Invisibles turned up…Pete King and Dan Goodall. A couple of changes and away we went.

2 minutes and Fawcett produced a cracking save. 2 minutes later Fawcett produced a cracking save. 6 minutes into the game and Fawcett's legs stopped another shot on goal.

Cox and Moore tightened their partnership and Cousins and Arnold were then on overtime as they tried to contain a busy mid field.

Martin Newbury was having a great game at the back and we fought our way back into the game. We made good progress up to the area but had no finishing power. Both Dan Goodall and Pete King worked hard but couldn't break the defensive shield.

Half way through the half we had pushed up and got caught. A chip from the edge of the box cleared Fawcett and skipped into the net. 2-5. .

Elysee linked with Homer and a ball cut back from the bye line was hit on the volley but Arnold's blockbuster was blocked on the line. It was the nearest in the half to a third goal for us.

Goodall limped off Murray's injury prevented him coming back on so we were down to bare bones for the rest of the half.

Cousins was still busy, while Moore was still verbally battering the opposition. Cox was hampered by his foot problem but we stuck at it and gave the last fifteen minutes of the half our best shot. .

10 minutes to go Wimborne won a corner and a free header found the back of the net 2-6.

We hit back through Matt Newbury and a ground shot slipped past the full back but the keeper got down well to hold the ball.

The whistle went on a 2-6 scoreline.
