Match Report Amesbury vs Verwood 26-Apr-2008
SYDENHAMS LEAGUE (WESSEX) DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 26TH APRIL 2008
AMESBURY TOWN 2 VERWOOD TOWN 2
Our last game of the season and a secured fourth place. Was it
complacency then that let in Amesbury with only seven minutes
gone for a chip over Willis to put the home team ahead?
We stumbled a bit before Homer's buzzing performance on the
left and Goodall's running sparked a fight back. Dyer's
role in the middle was unusual but effective as he and Matt
Newbury worked hard to gain possession in the middle of the
park.
Amesbury worked the flanks well and a good cross with twenty
minutes gone produced a header that whistled over the bar. Willis
was again in action minutes later with a good catch from a
hopeful curling twenty yarder.
Twenty Seven minutes and Amesbury's keeper brought off a
great double save as Goodall and Homer tried their luck.
Lynch and King were under pressure with fifteen minutes left as
some good inter passing broke down our midfield resistance and
let in a couple of runners on goal. Lynch blocked one shot and
then King cut out the re bound. The ball broke wide and a
tremendous volley had goal written all over it. Luckily Willis
can't read and produced a terrific save.
Homer and Reeves made ground on the left and Homer took Reeves
reverse pass and blasted a shot that clipped the bar and shot
over.
Stephen's and Elysee worked the full back spots exceptionally
well against two quick flank players and found time to support
Newbury and Homer.
Pressure remained on the home team up to the interval but
Amesbury went in ahead 0-1.
Out we came with Adie Arnold's and Nigel Reeves words of
wisdom trying to break through inner ear wax. At least Homer was
enthused and four minutes into the half went solo to pick up a
defensive pass and beat the keeper from close in. 1-1.
Amesbury were startled and three minutes later made Willis
produce the save of the match from a header.
Elysee raced down the right and linking with Goodall broke
through a tough defence. Goodall picked up the cross and a left
foot shot was blocked by the full back. In came Dyer and a follow
up effort was turned over the bar.
In came the inswinger, up went Lynch and again the keeper read it
well and the ball was palmed to safety.
Fifty eight minutes, Homer cut in from the left and from twenty
yards curled in a shot that nestled into the top corner. 2-1.
Seventy three minutes and it was 2-2. A good move a long raking
shot and Willis was beaten.
Two minutes later Stephen's over zealous tackle earned a red
card. Management shuffled the pack but we didn't defend.
Homer hit the bar twice, Dyer shot wide and Goodall brought out a
tremendous save from the home keeper.
Amesbury worked hard and pushed us back. King and Lynch worked
extra hard and with Willis reading the game so well we were solid
to the end.
So we finished the season with a draw and fourth place in the
league.
Last Game of the season Result 2-2.
