Match Report AFC Aldermaston vs Verwood Town 05-Jan-2008

SYDENHAMS LEAGUE (WESSEX) DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 5TH JANUARY 2008
AFC ALDERMASTON 0 - VERWOOD TOWN 4

First minute, and a King cross from the left had Elysee and the home keeper in a race to meet the ball. The keeper won.

A minute later and King again was provider to release Goodall. A low cross and Faulkner hit a cracking left foot shot that the keeper did well to save.

Homer and Dyer moved up the flank and Dyer broke away to try a shot but it went the way of our other efforts, wide of the post.

We were enjoying more freedom than most games this season as Aldermaston stood off the challenge and gave us room to play. Faulkner particularly revelled in the middle and constantly spread the play to keep us on the attack. Shots from Dyer and Elysee went wide and Goodall had a couple of great chances that flew into the arms of the keeper.

We had to wait until the 30th minute before we got the goal we were striving for. Pressure won us a corner. Dyer's inswinger was targeted by Faulkner and a powerful header this time beat the keeper to send us into the lead 1-0.

A brief flurry from Aldermaston gave Willis a chance to flex himself but it was short lived and we again went on the attack. King went close and then Elysee smashed a shot that hit the foot of the post and spun out of play.

35 minutes Dyer and Goodall exchanged passes. Goodall hammered a low cross across the box and King stormed in to smash the ball into the bottom corner. 2-0.

We stayed on the attack but couldn't increase the goal tally so we went in at the whistle 2-0 ahead.

Adie Arnold and Nigel Reeves hammered the message that we had to stay on the attack and this time they were treated to a start not seen for many weeks.

One minute and King shot straight at the keeper. Two minutes later his header was palmed over the bar. The corner bounced around the edge of the box and in came Homer to try his luck. It went wide. Goodall King and Dyer were denied shots by good defensive work but we stayed on the attack and felt it would be only a matter of time before we increased the lead.

59 minutes we did precisely that. Homer collected a loose ball on the edge of our box and a chip over the right full back gave Goodall a chance to run free. This time there was no mistakeā€¦.3-0.

Clearances from the home side were high and long. Lynch and Giles handled the missile attack comfortably. Yerby and Homer were picking up Lynch and Giles clearances and this springboarded our flank attacks.

Dyer freed up by Arnold had a shot and then Arnold followed through to drive a rasping shot over the bar. We should have had more than three goals but our finishing was terrible. Maybe we had too much time for a change but the opportunities were constantly wasted.

Aldermaston then had five minutes of good play but soon backed off and defended in numbers. Individually there were some good players, but their team work on the day left a lot to be desired.

75 minutes and Dyer raced free. A hard low cross and Goodall this time caught it just right. 4-0.

We followed up by forcing four corners on the trot but the keeper did superbly well bringing off some cracking saves to keep the score down.

We finished the game with a resounding 4-0 win and three points.
