Drawn away to a 3rd Division side (albeit unbeaten so far this season) and playing on what can only be described as a field, was always going to be difficult! The fact that they were a hard working, skilful side and we started off thinking it was going to be a breeze made for an horrendous first half performance. Although we made a number of chances that weren't converted, we deserved to go in at half time trailing by a goal.
Second half saw a major improvement and credit the lads for that. We totally dominated and fully deserved the two goals from Dean Evans. The newly introduced Andy Martin laid on the first for him, and Dean managed to miss-hit it past the approaching goalkeeper into the far corner.
So 1~1 after 55 ins and twenty minutes later a cross from the left saw Dean coming in from deep and volleying the ball into the back of the net from 15 yards. The game had swung totally in our favour, however within a minute from the only chance they had had up to then we were pegged back to 2 all.
Tempers were beginning to flare up and although the Verwood boys were keeping their cool, there were some pretty rash challenges going in.
Extra time came and with 'Physio Kath' patching up the walking wounded we went about finishing the game off. Stevie Reeves who had come on into left midfield kept disappearing from view in the long grass, however we peservered playing football and in the first half of extra time were given a penalty when after rounding the goalkeeper Andy Martin was pulled down by the defender. Converted by Matt Newbury, we led again.
For the remainder of the match they through everything at us, although they had been reduced to 10 men due to a sending off for throwing a punch. They then played into our hands by completely losing the plot and giving away needless free kicks.
Numerous chances came our way, but none converted. In the end we deserved the win but had been made to work hard for it! Our final change was introducing Bunce up front for the last two minutes but even he couldn't score. (Probably because he didn't touch the ball!).
Scorer: Dean Evans (2) Matt Newbury 1 (penalty)
