Match Report Verwood Aldermaston 1-Sep-2007
SYDENHAMS LEAGUE (WESSEX) DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 1ST SEPTEMBER 2007
VERWOOD TOWN 3 - AFC ALDERMASTON 0
A mirror of the start against Shaftesbury. Both teams playing good open football but not quite with the same pace that we experienced on Bank Holiday Monday.
Aldermaston‘s keeper dived low right to palm out a Goodall effort and then Fawcett leaped high left to tip a shot round the post.
11minutes gone and Homer, Goodall and Dyer exchanged passes on the left. Goodall broke into the box and a pass found Reeves. A low shot was palmed away but in came Yerby to slam the ball into the net. 1-0.
We stayed on the attack. A couple of minutes after the opening goal Lynch almost made it two, powering a Dyer corner just over the bar.
Aldermaston got on top for a spell testing Freeman and Giles. Fawcett was very alert and anything that did get through Fawcett was quickly off his line to keep a clean sheet.
Truan, playing wide on the right floated a high ball for a King header. The keeper finger tipped the ball out of goal and Goodall pounced to head back for goal, a full back chested the ball out. Reeves then tried a shot but saw it go wide.
It was a good spell for us but we couldn’t find another goal.
Aldermaston had a brief flurry and almost had the ball in the net but an athletic Fawcett brought off a cracking save to deny them drawing level.
A minute to go and a corner was met by King. A flashing header, a great save and the half closed at 1-0.
In the first minute we were prised open on the left, a cross was allowed to roll on the edge of the box. The shot could have produced one of our worst moments, but luckily Fawcett was alert and a dive low to his left saved the blushes.
We looked shell shocked as Aldermaston had another couple of efforts but they couldn’t breach Fawcett’s goal.
Reeves gave the spark we needed and excellent ball control in the middle of the park enabled a through ball to find King free on the left. One on one…..the keeper won.
54 minutes and Lynch won a header at the back. The ball found Dyer and a low cross was diverted into the net by Yerby. 2-0.
Truan, Dyer and Goodall all then had golden chances to score but the keeper was in excellent form and won every challenge.
Homer, Dyer then on to King, Homer finished off the move with a flashing shot but the keeper, having a magnificent game, threw himself across the flight of the ball to save on the line.
7 minutes to go. Dyer’s corner was low and hard. Yerby caught it just right. This time the keeper could only watch the ball fly into the net for Yerby’s hat trick.
2 minutes left and Homer linked with King. A chip into the box and Elysee dived low to head the ball for the bottom corner. The keeper yet again made a good save to keep the score at 3-0.
All credit to Aldermaston, there was no giving up. A long ball wide left caught us napping. The ball was switched back to the centre forward who lashed the ball wide of goal.
The ball was in the centre of the pitch when the whistle went for a well earned three points.
