Match Report Newport vs Verwood Town 05-Oct-24
VELOCITY WESSEX LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 5TH OCTOBER 2024
NEWPORT 3 VERWOOD TOWN 0
Good start, bad finish, no goals for. Just about summarises the performance on our second visit to Newport in a couple of weeks.
Grzybowski’s break down the right with only a couple of minutes gone opened up a gap. The cross only needed a touch to open the scoring. Not to be. No one on the end of it.
Newports flanks looked dangerous but both were shackled by Danvers and Kerr respectively.
Pope and Buggey worked hard to prod Whitelaw and Knott but in front of the sticks we were woeful.
A free kick on the edge of the area found an unmarked player in the 6 yard box. 20 minutes gone.. 0-1.
We retaliated well and enjoyed slightly more possession of the ball towards half time.
Mitchell’s handling was top notch taking care of the odd attempt on goal so on the whistle we went in with no further movement on the scoreboard.
Half Time 0-1.
Danver’s break down the left with only a couple of minutes gone finished with a cross begging for conversion. No takers. Grzybowski then split the Newport defence shortly after but agonised as his rasping shot hit the side netting.
We then lost focus. Newports possession increased and we gradually lost ground.
10 minutes gone and a teasing cross went unchecked. A free header made it 0-2.
The quality of play of both teams deteriorated for the rest of the half but with 20 minutes gone Newport took advantage of lax marking to make it 0-3.
We rallied. It could have been a superb comeback had we been more clinical in front of the sticks. Yet again the malaise continues.
Result 0-3.
