Match Report Romsey Town vs Verwood Town 29-Sep-20

SYDENHAMS (WESSEX) LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
TUESDAY 29TH SEPTEMBER 2020
ROMSEY TOWN 0 VERWOOD TOWN 2

A brisk opening and good football was a plus for the spectators who claimed residence. Both teams were committed to attack.

Lynch made a great save from and early raid and Evans went close at the other end. Maddocks then created space with good feet and Hall’s overlap split Romsey’s left flank. A low cross and Cooper’s follow up shot flew over the bar.

We pressured. A melee in the box finished with Romsey giving away a penalty. Up stepped Vining – 1-0.

Smith and Zanin worked hard in the middle and edged personal battles. Billy Cooper on the left looked comfortable in his first outing for the Club.

Watkins caught the eye with excellent defending robbing a runner and sparking a counter through Maddocks. Maddocks chip found Evans but a pivot and low volley deserved more than a clipped post.

Smith powered a shot just past the post on the half time whistle.

Half Time 1-0

Maddocks came off allowing Nicholson to stretch his legs in the second half and a shuffle of the pack took a few minutes to settle down, but we kept tight at the back with Kelly and Elsom superb in their cover responsibilities. What did creep through was capably dealt with by an athletic Lynch.

Zanin and Cooper linked to open up Romsey’s right and Coopers cross into the box created a defensive scramble but eventually a big boot cleared the danger for Romsey.

Halls pace left his opposite number for dead half way through the half and his cross to Vining had defenders scrambling to clear.

Evans went close, then Nicholson fired just past the post as we maintained pressure.

Romsey’s rally was expected but again Elson Kelly Watkins and Hall were on song and with Lynch giving added confidence to our defence we survived the home teams onslaught.

Then Vining struck. Space and a half chance gave a 2-0 lead and giving little chance of Romsey grabbing anything from the game.

Result 2-0
