Match Report Verwood Town vs Merley Cobham 08-Mar-20

DORSET WOMENS LEAGUE
SUNDAY 8TH MARCH 2020
VERWOOD TOWN LADIES 4 MERLEY COBHAM 4

"3 GAMES UNBEATEN AS MERLEY FIGHT BACK TO SECURE DRAW"

After 3 pitch changes we managed to secure our venue with Merley kindly agreeing to play us again at their home ground.

A late pitch inspection by the Ref allowed the game to take place on the premise that further rain would perhaps cause an abandonment.

Game got under way and Verwood struck home on the 12th minute with Cleo rounding 3 Merley defenders after a clinical through ball from Jo.

The game settled down for a good period of time with Merley working a lot of balls down the right channel but being defended well with link ups from Georgie and Ellie. It was an inswinging corner from Merley that beat everyone and on the 30 minute mark drew them level with the ball not being defended well enough going straight in.

Ten minutes later saw Cleo beating the Merley defense and strike cleanly 40' to take us into the break 2-1 at half time.

Half Time 2-1

It was Merley in the second half changing player positions to nulify our attack saw them draw level again. This time a thunderous strike from the right on 51' into the left side of the net.

The pendulum swung back to Verwood and fired shots at the Merley keeper, an attack from the wing and head toward goal beat the keeper however a diving boot from a defender kept the linesman flag down from awarding the goal. No VAR in action so we will never know.

The 3rd Verwood goal came from a Cleo cross from the left, a ball controlled on the volley by Sarah and placed into the corner by a deep midfield run by Sammie. 62'

As you guessed it!!! Queens of the come back....Back to Merley to level it up. 3-3....

Timer on my watch ran out of battery so it went like this....

Sammie through ball from midfield, Cleo one touch to get it out from her feet and then hit it....painfully for the Merley keeper got fingertips to it however the force of the shot saw it roll over the line. 4-3.

Again back to Merley to even things up....and they did...annoyingly for us to make the final score all square.

Full Time 4-4

A game played with great spirits and highly competitive. A great game for the mutual.

Player's Player of the Match going to Chloe for a good midfield performance

Manager's Player of the Match going to Sarah R for a team spirited effort, a goal assist and putting the team first.
