Match Report Verwood Town v Wimborne Town 09-Jul-18

PRE-SEASON STEVE MOORE TROPHY MATCH
MONDAY 9TH JULY 2018
VERWOOD TOWN 0 WIMBORNE TOWN 8

Lots of new faces and yet to gel but we started well and forced a corner in the first couple of minutes. Wimborne scrambled the ball clear despite a Hatch threat.

4 minutes later we were taught the first of several lessons as Wimborne broke through a token defence to almost go ahead had it not been for an attentive Gajic clearing off the line.

The game see-sawed a bit and 10 minutes into the half Webber tried a dipping cross that was tipped over the bar.

Kimber was a revelation fetching and carrying and a great through ball gave Vint a chance on the left. A deep cross was hammered out and a quick counter went right to left. Good accurate passing and the ball finished up in the bottom corner from a right flank cross. 0-1

Wimborne then had a golden patch. Fitness told as they pushed us back and good interplay had Tierney proving his quality with an excellent save on the line.

15 minutes later Vint and Kimber worked a passage down our left and Vint’s cross was booted clear.

25 minutes a simple but effective break down Wimborne’s right wasn’t covered and we went 0-2 down.

Head and Gajic forged a good link in midfield. A slide rule pass from Head gave Vining an opportunity to shoot. Defenders blocked his effort and again the ball was hammered down Wimborne’s left. A high ball into the box was taken by Tierney under the bar.

We lapsed concentration and on 42 minutes another goal was added to Wimborne’s tally.

Half Time 0-3

4 changes were made at half time to give the bench a run. 2 minutes later and we went 0-4 as we settled.

It was a fit and ruthless Wimborne that gave us a sharp lesson.

We were cut up in the middle. A ball wide right. A deep cross and the ball was whipped past Tierney by Mills. Jack won’t get many better ones than this one. 0-5.

We rallied, not for long though. An attack was broken up by a solid looking Wimborne defence. A long ball down the middle was slotted past an advancing Tierney to make it 0-6.

On 75 minutes we seemed to gel. Good interplay and a determined Vint / Gajic combination split Wimborne’s defence. Davies followed up but his shot was palmed out for a corner. An inswinger should have been put away but a Wimborne hair cut cleared the ball away from danger.

Manley and Davies opened up Wimnborne’s left but good defensive cover blocked Davies’ cross.

Vint rattled two defenders with good feet but had his progress blocked by two heavies.

Then the VAR system proved useless as a player tripped on burnt grass and was awarded a penalty. Richardson’s feelings were dismissed by a hard line ref. 0-7.

A minute left and laxity gave space for Wimborne to pinch the Trophy with a score of 0-8.

Result 0-8.
