Match Report Verwood Town vs Bournemouth 26-Oct-16

WESSEX LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
WEDNESDAY 26TH OCTOBER 2016
VERWOOD TOWN 0 BOURNEMOUTH 0

Absences and changes to the squad meant a different line up to the last couple of games.

For a change we settled quickly and within a couple of minutes had sprung a couple of attacks. Phelps at right back won a tackle and linking with Dyer broke through the centre of the park. A wide ball to Evans in an unfamiliar role wide right opened up a chance of a cross into the box, Evans didn’t disappoint, but there hadn’t been a follow up because of the pace of our attack so the ball flew across the box and out the other side.

Ryan Kelly a minute later rounded a marker and had a crack from 20 yards. The keeper did well to catch on the post.

Stung, Bournemouth cut through the middle and Lynch made his first save of the night taking a shot just inside the post.

Phelps headed a long ball clear of the area and this was followed by a Donachy tackle on the edge of the area preventing a shot on goal.

Bournemouth had a bit more possession than we did at this stage and gave our back four a torrid few minutes. Ben Kelly slotting in alongside Donachy won an aerial battle and then Donachy’s sliding tackle on the edge of the box drew penalty claims and ooh’s and aah’s from Bournemouth’s dug out.

Johnson Gajic , on to Ryan Kelly and a shot on target was deflected by a stretched leg in the box. Gajic followed in and hammered the ball across goal but no one got a touch.

Bournemouth pushed us back. Gajic and Dyer dropped deeper to contend with extra pressure. Elsom stormed out of defence after winning a tackle and made ground. A ball to Johnson inside the full back opened up a chance and Johnson tried from a narrow angle but saw his effort go wide.

Bournemouth mixed their attacks switching to a few long balls. Lynch was alert to the change and balls to runners were tidied up by header’s and a big boot.

A defibrillator was employed to keep Anderton moving, It worked. An Anderton header from a corner almost put us in front had it not been for a full back on the line.

Half Time 0-0

Bournemouth upped energy levels at the re start. A ball wide right was policed by Ben Kelly. Good feet took him past the runner. A cross field ball found Evans. A deep cross reached Ryan Kelly but his run was blocked by defenders.

Lynch took a catch under the bar as the game went end to end. Dyer the tested the Bournemouth keeper and Johnson brought out a double save as he hammered a low volley for goal.

Phelps and Ben Kelly were in the mix as Bournemouth switched paly to flanks. One attack got through into the box but a Donachy stretched leg diverted the ball past the post. In came the corner. The ball bobbled around and finally Lynch was able to force his way through bodies to fist it clear.

63 minutes had Bergin on for Johnson.

Gajic and Dyer had imposed themselves in the middle and sparked off a few good attacks. We couldn’t score though.

Bournemouth almost did what we couldn’t. A bright piece of football cut us up and a chance was offered to forwards. The ball was laid back to the edge of the box and fortunately the shot went high and wide.

We then had sustained attacks but confined them to the edge of the area by tenacious Donachy an Phelps tackles.

Evans had a shot cleared out of the Bournemouth box and then Bergin was up ended as he approached the area. Dyer took the free kick. The keeper made an excellent catch.

We cracked in the middle. A good move put players in the box and a volley on target from 10 yards looked destined to alter the score board. It was a Chris Lynch night as he brilliantly saved the shot with a flying dive.

Gajic gave the Bournemouth keeper a chance to emulate the Lynch save and the keeper came through with flying colours palming a great shot over the bar.

Ryan Kelly put his header from the corner over the angle.

9 minutes left and Bergin wriggled through tackles to try his luck. It wasn’t his night.

Both sides went for a winner. A couple of corners, good saves and a game free of trainer involvement meant good viewing for spectators.

Bothe teams had to settle for a point but on the night a fair reflection of the match.

Result 0-0
