Match Report Lymington Town vs Verwood Town 4-Nov-14

WESSEX LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION
TUESDAY 4TH NOVEMBER 2014
LYMINGTON TOWN 2 VERWOOD TOWN 1

Rutten forced a corner within a minute of the start. A shot from the edge of the box produced a good save from the keeper. A long drop kick put two forwards racing for the ball but Buck covered the danger and sparked a counter move down the left. It petered out with a Foster shot hitting defenders and going out for dead ball.

It was a good start with both teams playing good open football.

Lymington's break down the left with a couple of minutes on the clock had Lynch making a good save under pressure from the cross.

17 minutes we were back on the attack through Rutten down the right. A ball threaded through for Fisk was picked up and Fisk played in Whelan on the edge of the box. Whelan's shot was blocked on the line and bounced clear.

It was a fast game with both sides marking tightly. A couple of fouls went our way and from a free kick on the edge of the box Whelan blasted a shot just over the bar.

The middle of the park experienced a lot of activity and half way through the half Whelan won a tussle to break free. Dyer made an intelligent run picking up the pass and sending the ball on to Fisk. Fisk rounded his marker and a low ball into the box was won by the keeper as Foster raced in.

Lynch was then in action tipping the ball over the bar from a shot and then thumping the corner out of the area.

The game continued at a fast pace with both teams creating chances.

With five minutes left Lynch won a race to boot a clearance for Fisk. Fisk with his back to goal laid it back to Whelan. A low left footer destined for the bottom corner was well saved by a very much in form keeper.

Evans made a right flank run with a minute of the half left and a deep cross was met by Foster. The header skimmed the bar.

It was a good first 45 minutes and the whistle blew to send both teams in sharing a 0-0 score line.

Half Time 0-0

McGilchrist was whistled up for a foul then watched the free kick go high and wide over the bar.

A clearance out of Lymington's defence was collected by Evans. Moving quickly down the right he was joined by Whelan who took over the move going centrally. A pass wide left gave Buck space for a run but his shot was blocked in the area. In went Dyer but his volley went wide.

15 minutes gone and we won a corner on the right. Gajic judged it well and slotted the ball through defenders and into the bottom corner 1-0.

20 minutes and we lost our sense of direction and purpose. A high ball into our area was half cleared and then became a hot potato as it was headed around without clearing the box. A final flurry and the ball looped over the bewildered Lynch and nestled comfortably just inside the post. There wasn't enough power to send it to the back of the net. 1-1.

It now got feisty. Hand bags were flourished as a series of hard tackles took over with both teams culprits.

70 minutes and Lymington went down to 10 men as a judged 'studs up' tackle earned a red.

Then came lunacy.

We won a free kick 35 yards out. Lynch came up to take it but the trajectory was just right for a Lymington player to chest down and send away a runner on their right. McGilchrist tracked but his tackle was in the area and judged enough for a red and of course a penalty. 1-2.

Satterley came on for Foster with 15 minutes to go and was soon chasing a ball down the right as Evans took no time at all in bringing him into the game. His run was halted by a strong tackle flooring him just outside the box. Whelan took the kick and Dyer almost turned it into the net but screwed it slightly wide.

2 minutes later Lynch had to come out of the box to head clear and then Buck was on hand to hammer a clearance away from the six yard box.

It was still end to end and both team managers used subs to maintain pace and pressure.

80 minutes Cousins was on for Rutten.

We slightly edged play for a short period but tackles got tougher and with 48 minutes gone of the half Lynch joined players in the box for a corner. He almost got to it but a collision with the keeper finished with the keeper getting a straight red. A frantic finish and Anderton getting 1 minute of play as he came on for Evans.

The game finished with 3 points going to the home side. We had tossed away a great opportunity for points but ….. that's football.

Result 1-2.
