Match Report Hayling United vs Verwood Town 4-Sep-2012

FA VASE 1Q REPLAY
TUESDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER 2012
HAYLING UNITED 3 VERWOOD TOWN 0

Because we hadn't managed to convert the chances we had in last Saturday's FA Vase game, here we were on a humid Tuesday night at Hayling in a replay.

Lots of juggling was necessary because of absences. Most noticeably Lynch on holiday. Chas Gajic donned the gloves giving Matt Steer a job to do in mid field.

Gajic was alert enough with only 4 minutes gone to race from goal and gather safely before Hayling's predators had a chance to shoot.

Hayling looked the more determined of the two sides and most likely to score. We didn't appear to have a presence in the middle of the park as Webb had been pressed back alongside Batchelor as we defended deep.

10 minutes had elapsed before Hayling got the goal they were looking for. A run down the right an inch perfect cross and a free header sped past Gajic. 0-1.

6 minutes later a similar pattern but this time Gajic managed to gauge the flight and safe hands kept the score down.

We couldn't make that all important impact and Hayling looked comfortable on the ball.

We got through 20 minutes of pressure before we managed retaliation. Elysee led the fight back and linking with Evans created space on the right. A cut back from the line found Steer. An attempted chip over the advancing g keeper went over the bar.

Hayling hit back and Gajic did well to take a difficult high ball. A quick throw to Kelly, a raking pass to Hill and we broke through on the left. Satts raced free and found space. Unfortunately so did his shot.

Webb's tough tackling won him a tussle for the ball and slipping the ball to Delaney went wide for the return. A cross found Saxby. On to Satts out to Hill then Steer, on to Evans. Evans delivery dropped on the penalty spot but there was no Verwood head to test the keeper. It was a good move full of intent but with no cutting edge.

Hayling got back into their stride and a melee in our area was finally over when Gajic dropped on to the ball to stop any shots.

33 minutes and Elysee pulled up short with a hamstring pull. Evans had to drop back to full back. Matt Steer went wide right and Chris Hall took up a mid field role.

Half time came with no further incidents so we went in to a score line ofNN..

0-1 We kicked off the second half OK with a couple of attacks making their way into Haylings box but no follow up meant the balls bouncing free and being cleared without difficulty.

4 minutes and Haylings response was to show us how to put the ball on target. Luckily Gajic made an excellent save.

6 minutes we had a break down the right a deep cross and again no follow up. It could be argued, don't cross if there's no one there. If this was the case though we would never see a crossed ball !!!

Hayling knocked the ball up field and a shot hit defenders and flew out. In came a Hayling shirt and the ball hit the back of the net from 20 yards. 0-2.

54 minutes and Steer had to come off with a dead leg. Conrad's slumbers were interrupted and another shuffle of the pack was made to accommodate him.

Evans was extra busy as we settled and some excellent defending kept the score down to 0-2.

Batchelor moved up field a bit to join Webb and a good move through the center gave Saxby a chance but frustratingly shot wide.

Delaney then had to almost commit Hari Kari diving into boots just on the edge of the box to head clear. Kelly hammered the ball out of the area as we got pushed back again by an eager Hayling side.

Gajic had to prove his worth with a couple of good saves and then flying across his goal line to palm out what looked to be a third Hayling goal.

Hall hit the angle of cross bar and post with a rising shot and then Satts slammed shot destined for goal that the keeper did well to palm away.

Hill although suffering from a thigh strain and severe blisters made a run down the left and a good cross was headed wide by Batchhelor.

Hill's problems were obviously giving stress but he stuck it out to the whistle.

We trudged on and on 96 minutes Hayling broke through leaving Gajic a one on oneN.

Result 0-3.
