Match Report Verwood Town vs Warminster Town 20-Apr-2011

SYDENHAMS (WESSSEX) LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
WEDNESDAY 20TH APRIL 2011
VERWOOD TOWN 3 WARMINSTER TOWN 1

Haskell was first to test the keeper with a downward header just missing the post. Webb then shot, but wide. It was a good start to the game, so with only 7 minutes gone we had had two efforts on our visitor’s goal. Finishing was normal but there seemed more purpose tonight than in previous games.

Another two minutes gone and Lynch Elysee Freeman worked the ball forward leaving the last pass to Haskell to set up Delaney just outside the box. A swerving dipping shot hit a defender and spun up in the air. The keeper had a comfortable catch.

Elysee then tried a volley as we pressed forward. The volley viciously took out the corner flag.

Then we saw Dyer Dear and Webb combine to release Elysee. Over to Gajic and an angled shot was well saved by the keeper.

We had enjoyed a major part of the first fifteen minutes without too much response. It wasn’t to last.

Warminster clicked into gear. A sweeping move down the right a deep cross and Freeman fortunately got across quickly to cut out the danger.

A period of possession followed and Lynch Delaney and Morrison weathered the onslaught. Fawcett’s contribution during this spell was a good diving save and then a flick over the bar from a dipping shot.

28 minutes and Haskell got a deserved goal from a Webb Gajic move. Haskell took the final ball to the advancing keeper and chipped him for our first of the match. 1-0.

Warminster got stuck in and we defended deep as our visitors worked the middle of the park to their advantage. Luckily we survived and went in at half time one up.

Half Time 1-0.

Freeman and Elysee moved down the right. Elysee skipped round the defender and a low cross found Haskell. A shot on the turn but the connection hit the ground and went wide of the post.

We won a corner. Up went Haskell but headed wide. Lynch then followed suit. Again we were looking at shots not finding target.

Warminster retaliated with a run down their right. Making it to the edge of the box a good cross flew into the area and Fawcett palmed the ball away to the edge of the area. In came a volley and Lynch blocked it on the line. It was hairy few minutes but we survived.

Good passing and movement gave Warminster an edge and we worked hard to get the mid field sorted out.

33 minutes we broke the defensive shield and Delaney delivered a great shot the keeper did well to punch out. The ball fell for another try and this time Delaney slammed the ball low into the net. 2-0.

2 minutes later Warminster went through the middle of the park. A shot was beaten out and the return shot gave Fawcett no chance. 2-1

There was a bite to the game now and tackles were brisk but noticeably there was no call for trainers.

Goodall came on for Webb and in time to make a crucial tackle blocking an attack again through the middle.

Dear took the ball from his opposite number and breaking free sent Dyer away for him to chip the ball into the box. In went Gajic and his header was caught just under the bar.

The game see sawed for a while with the passing quality good to see from both sides.

Morrison broke up an attack and threaded the ball to a free Haskell. Racing away Haskell drew the keeper and slid the ball past him into the net. 3-1.

Fawcett tipped the ball round the post with a minute left making the score unaltered at RESULT 3-1.
