Match Report Fleet Spurs vs Verwood Town 29-Jan-2011

SYDENHAMS (WESSSEX) LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
SATURDAY 29TH JANUARY 2011
FLEET SPURS 2 VERWOOD TOWN 7

Another cancelled game last week meant an even rustier looking squad. None more so than Haskell who looked like an advert for the adage 'He had eyes like ....holes in the snow'. New baby was said to be the cause. ???

Anyway we trudged out to face a fit and ready Fleet.

We kicked off well and Saxby nipped between defenders to square the ball back for Haskell to miss hit. The ball few on to Dyer and a low shot went wide. A promising start.

Delaney, back from Liverpool (a visit to see his hub caps) cut out a quick counter attack and a cross field ball was inch perfect for Dyer to race free and offer a deep cross for Aspin to turn goalwards. The keeper made a good save and sent Spurs centre forward on a race with Lynch. Lynch won this one and a ball back to Tong gave a return high and long ball back in the ranks of Spurs defence. Lanahan forced a corner. In it came and Lynch caught it just right but the volley sailed over the bar.

A minute later whist we were still funnelling back Spurs struck quickly down the flank and a good ball inside what remained of our defence was fired in past Tong. 0-1.

23 minutes and after a mediocre five minutes Elysee whipped over s deep cross that the keeper fumbled, a quick scramble in the box and a corner was given. Haskell swivelled and hit a low shot into the bottom corner 1-1.

32 minutes saw Saxby shoot past the post and a minute later we won a corner. Dyer sent an inswinger and Haskell planted a bullet header past the keeper. 2-1.

34 minutes Haskell's 50/50 with the keeper resulted in the ball spinning to Dyer but the shot went wide.

43 minutes and Aspin slid the ball over the line from Saxby's cross. 3-1.

Spurs almost then pulled one back as we relaxed allowing a snap shot from outside the box.

The half finished though with an unbelievable 3-1 score line.

46 minutes and a sparkling Russ Dyer beat the back to the ball and a low cross was almost our fourth of the game as Aspin turned the ball inches past the post.

We maintained the offensive and chased everything on offer. It was one of our better performances.

Spurs broke on the left but Elysee's pace had the edge and winning the ball Chas laid the ball back for Tong to plant a high ball into the heart of the Spurs defence. Lanahan spun wide of his marker and a shot went over the bar.

Elysee pulled up short in the 52nd minute with a hamstring strain. On came Adam White.

Spurs rallied strongly giving Delaney and Lynch plenty to do.

A fierce cross and a Haskell shot forced the keeper to spill the ball. Dyer raced in to side foot across the area for Lanahan to slot the ball into the net. 4-1.

60 minutes and a cross yet again from Saxby was seized by Haskell. Although a bobble gave a problem, Haskell's shin did the rest and the ball finished up skipping past the keeper for Mike's hat trick and our fifth of the game.

Spurs hit back and this time it was Matt Dear tested to the ultimate as chased the ball down the line. A last ditch sliding tackle did the trick as the ball was steered away from the area.

75 minutes Aspin made way for Carl Smalley.

Lynch joined our attack as we broke upfield. Haskell's cut back gave Lynch a chance but his shot was tipped over the bar. In came the corner. This time Lynch made no mistake with a header that ripped into the roof of the net. 6-1.

Webb got number 7 with a volley from the edge of the box and then just on 90 minutes Spurs pulled one back with a good goal.

Result 7-2.
