Match Report Verwood Town vs Keynsham Town 13-Nov-2010

FA CARLSBERG VASE - 2ND ROUND PROPER
SATURDAY 13TH NOVEMBER 2010
VERWOOD TOWN 2 KEYNSHAM TOWN 1

We needed a slight juggle at the back. Lynch was missing so Delaney and Morrison became the central pairing. Martin Smith made a come back from his London shackles so we had a few positional changes but generally had a good squad.

Keynsham moved the ball quickly down the right and a high cross was cleared by Delaney's head. Smith latched on to the clearance and a sweeping ball to Dyer on the left opened up Keynsham for a cross to drop into the penalty area. Haskell tried to divert it into goal but Keynsham had cover on the line and the danger was cleared.

Lanahan won a tussle in the middle of the park and released King. King slipped the ball wide to Elysee and Elysee made the bye line before cutting the ball back for Haskell to blast wide.

Both sides were committed to attack so it made an interesting game for the spectators.

Fawcett pulled off a couple of good saves as Keynsham pushed forward. Morison blocked a couple of shots and Smith worked hard in front of the defence. Matt Dear and James Murray stayed wide as Keynsham worked the flanks and did well to hold a couple of sharp forwards.

33 minutes and we broke through on the flank. A cross found Haskell on the edge of the box and this time Haskell's direction couldn't have been better as the ball flew past the keeper. 1-0.

Retaliation was immediate. Fawcett saved a cracking effort and then Morrison body blocked a volley destined for goal.

Elysee powered his way through a tackle with five minutes to go but yet again the keeper pulled off great save.

Half Time 1-0.

Dear was the first to be tested at the start of the second half as Keynsham carried the game to us. Good football got them another break and this time it was Fawcett making a good catch to prevent an alteration to the score line.

For a while we watched the centre of the park have the ball. Lanahan and Smith fought hard against a good Keynsham act and although there were no prisoners to be taken the tackles were fair but hard.

King almost had the ball in the net with a good header following an Elysee break on the right and the Haskell hit the side netting as we pursued a second.

Keynsham's corner with 60 minutes gone almost found the back of the net as a header glanced down towards the line. Murray cleared it and then it was our turn to race forward catching Keynsham stretched at the back. King delivered a great shot from the edge of the box but the keeper was more than equal to the task of preventing us going ahead.

70 minutes and we earned a corner. In it came as an in swinger. A couple of stabs to get it over the line came from Smith and Haskell and then a big boot cleared the line. The ball though had gone straight up in the air. Delaney was on the edge of the box and waited....waited..waited..it dropped just right for a volley. It was the highlight of the game. The ball finished in the top corner of the net leaving a stunned keeper. 2-0.

Keynsham weren't finished. A 20 yarder hit the post and then got a well deserved goal making it 2-1.

We sat back. It was almost fatal. Keynsham hit the post again and brought saves from Fawcett causing heartburn for Adie Arnold.

We dug in. We got ourselves together and redoubled efforts to stay on top.

An astonishing 9 minutes of injury time was flagged up...... Keynsham went close again, we went close and it made for a grand stand finish.

Full Time though 2-1.
