Match Report Welton Rovers va Verwood Town 4-Sep-2010

FA VASE 1ST QUALIFYING ROUND
SATURDAY 4TH SEPTEMBER 2010
WELTON ROVERS 0 VERWOOD TOWN 3

We knew we had to produce a good performance against Welton otherwise a fate similar to Fleet and Hordean waited in the wings.

We caught Welton still settling in with a quick attack earning a free kick. Dear found Elysee, on to Haskell and a low shot was well saved by the keeper. A long clearance, well read by Delaney was headed on to Dyer, a snap shot from the edge of the box hit the post and bounced out for Haskell to slam it past the keeper. 1-0.

The goal gave us the left we needed but recent history was remembered where we had gone in front, lost discipline, and then took a pasting. This time we dug in.

Lynch partnered by Smith looked formidable and Delaney's shared patch in the middle of the park with Anderton also had a solid look.

We managed to find that extra bit of stamina and pace and generally kept on top of the game.

Lynch headed into the side netting from a corner and then Haskell's cross inched past the penalty spot with Dyers leg a foot short of turning the ball into the net.

Welton should have had a goal when the ball was switched from the bye line into the box but the shot was wild and woolly.

Then a purple patch. 19min and another corner was met by Lynch, but this time the ball landed on the roof of the net. 21 min Haskell was through but shot wide. 23 min a brilliant save from the home keeper from a Newbery volley. Then Haskell put the ball on top of the net from a Matt Dear cross.

A flurry from Welton gave Tong an opportunity to show what he could do, but the whistle went on a 1-0 half time score line.

A big question remained, could we maintain the pressure?

Lethargy looked as if it was going to set in as the game staggered a bit but we clicked again and Dyer was the catalyst making a good run down the left and then finding Haskell saw the ball hammered goalwards. A handball on the edge of the box brought a free kick decision. Elysee hammered the ball low but a defensive wall did its job and the ball went for a corner. In it came and Haskell's header skimmed the angle of the bar and post.

56 minutes another corner was headed on by Delaney and Smith wasted no time in hooking the ball past the keeper into the roof of the net. 2-0.

The home side dug in, and a couple of attacks down their left split us for efforts on goal. Again Tong was equal to the shots fired in and we retained the lead.

The team was urged to keep up the pace and Welton's keeper did extremely well to palm away a Newbery shot and then collect a Haskell header from just under the bar.

67 minutes Newbery gave way for Jack Mills to have a run and Mills was immediately in the thick of things making a break on the left and testing the keeper with a low shot.

Elysee's pace had the home team in trouble but we couldn't convert chances being created. We were well on top but had to take care as Welton looked very good on the break. One such attack finished with Tong diving low to his right to prevent a quick strike finishing up in the back of the net.

Ten minutes left and a couple of the lads were blowing but provided 100% effort. 8 minutes left Morrison chipped over the back line and Haskell raced through to chip the advancing keeper.

We finished the game 3-0 winners and learned we have the next round at Hamworthy United on 18th September 2010.
